Overall, the person who wrote the Car and Drive smart car review (Jared Gall) liked many of the smart car engineering and design features, but was not favorable about smart car performance, AKA the transmission.

If you visit one of the pages above, you'll also see the Car and Drive smart car review for the new smart ED. Definitely worth looking at, though I don't think the reviewer totally understands how a manual transmission feels when driving.
