Getting smart car insurance is an essential part of becoming a smart car buyer. Find out more about this smart car purchase requirement...
When I first started this site back in early 2008 (more ancient history here, I know!), the smart car – in all its micro-mininess – was brand new in the U.S. (other than a few hundred imports that had been coming in for a few years before that. So there was a lot of concern about whether you'd be able to get an insurance company to insure such a tiny car.
Because of that, smartUSA teamed up with one particular insurance company, Liberty Mutual, to offer guaranteed smart car insurance to U.S. smart car buyers. Their insurance plan could even be purchased with your car right at the smart center, making it not only convenient, but also economical. And this plan is still being offered; they call it "insurance foryou"... cute, huh?

We now have 2+ years of history with the smart fortwo car in America, so getting smart car insurance is really no big sweat, as far as I can tell. One reason is smart's stellar safety history. Here's what smartUSA says on their site:
"The smart fortwo meets or exceeds all U.S. government crash test standards, including a 5-star side crash rating, and earned the highest scores for front and side crash worthiness from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The smart fortwo is equipped with advanced crash avoidance and crash protection safety systems, including electronic stability program (esp®), and a reinforced steel safety cage called a tridion safety cell, which is standard equipment on all models."
They go on to talk about the smart car's strong 10-year safety track record in Europe. With more than a million smart cars on the road in 37 countries, I think you'd agree that's a pretty solid record.
When I finally became a smart car buyer myself a year ago, I simply contacted the car insurance company I was already using... Geico... and adding my smart car to my policy was no big deal... and really cheap! I pay less than $500/year here in Idaho, for 2 vehicles. Quite a switch from high insurance rate-plagued NJ, where you could easily pay more than $1000/year for the same policy.
So, shop around a bit for the best insurance policy for your smart fortwo. You shouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg, just because it's small or because it's still fairly new and somewhat unknown in the U.S. To help you shop car insurance rates, I've partnered with a service called eSurance:
I would recommend taking the time to get 2 or 3 different quotes to see which company gives you the best bang for the buck!
Again, take your time and shop around to get the best deal for you when it comes to smart car insurance! Liberty Mutual sounds like a great deal, but I don't know about you, but I always like to have choices. There can be big differences between car insurance companies and Liberty Mutual car insurance may not be your best option as a smart car buyer for your upcoming smart car purchase.
